My Musical Journey

The Struggle

My musical journey began in Jamaica, shaped less by internal doubts and more by the weight of financial constraints and the challenge of holding on to creative control. Opportunities were limited, and resources to record and promote music were scarce. From early on I understood that if I wanted to stay true to my mission, I needed to protect my works and my voice from being compromised.

That conviction grew even stronger when I moved to England. One of my first steps was to register with PRS, securing copyright control and registering my songs so that I could retain ownership and authority over my catalogue. This decision marked the start of a path where faith, discipline, and determination allowed me to navigate the struggle for independence as an artist.

The catalyst

Things took a positive turn in 1989 when I launched my first production, "That Lady," at Penthouse Studios in Kingston. There I worked with drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace of Rockers fame, Obeah on keyboards, and Dean Fraser on saxophone. Working with these foundation players wasn’t only a privilege, it was the moment I proved to myself that aiming for the best was the standard, and it set the course for everything that followed.

That same year I recorded four tracks: "That Lady" and "Reggae Organizer" at Penthouse, and "You've Done Me Wrong" and "Come To Me" at Mikey Reuben's studio on Mountain View Avenue. From these sessions I released "That Lady" and "Come To Me" on my own Rising Son label as the A and B sides of a 7-inch vinyl. With the late Castro Brown at Juju Music helping to push the songs, they began to circulate.

In 1990 I pressed a 12-inch mix of the tracks, which felt like the next step in defining my sound. Holding that record in my hands gave me a profound sense of independence. It marked the start of my commitment to build a career on my own terms, with creative control at the centre.

Ascendency

Fast forward a decade, during my UK travels, I met up and collaborated with Manchester’s Nucleus Roots. Our creative synergy gave birth to a series of roots anthems, solidifying my name as a serious artist in the genre. Together, we crafted timeless classics such as "Run Come Quick," "Deep Roots," "Irie Meditation," "Step It Up Rasta," and "State of Mind" (2016), each track adding a rich layer to my musical legacy.

Other releases between 2005 and 2023 include collaborations with producers from near and far: Paris, Finland, California, Italy and UK. My debut EP, 'Song of Creation' (May 2024) produced by Roots Reggae selector and producer I-niverse has been enjoying international airplay and media coverage, thanks to the promotional efforts from Explorations in Dub out of Cyprus. Word You Speak released by Don Hartley Music (2024) and Need More Love featuring a collaboration with Elastica Dub out of Italy released on the Dubophonic Records label(2025) are my latest projects.

Places I have performed include Band on The Wall in 2001 and Club Sauvage in Paris in 2013 with Nucleus Roots. In 2015, I performed at Hootananny in London, The Klondyke in Manchester with local reggae band Ruff Trade in 2016. Most recently, I brought my energy to the Manchester Carnival in 2025.

The journey continues.

Tour update and what’s next! Hey Tribe, I want you to hear this from me first. My autumn/winter tour will now take place in spring to align with the launch of my debut album. This move isn’t a delay, it’s strategic. My next single, “Spiritual War,” will come straight from the album: release date to be announced soon. This will let the music reach more ears and build the right anticipation before the full project arrives. By linking the album launch with the live shows, I’ll be able to deliver...
